ELMA Cream, Sugar Water and Kosher Wine
EMLA Cream is a topical anesthetic that is considered safe and effective for the prevention of pain with limited or no side effects for newborn circumcision. EMLA Cream is now FDA approved for newborns. It is a simple numbing cream that is applied to the foreskin by a licensed medical doctor prior to the circumcision. As of March 1999, anesthesia such as EMLA cream is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
In addition, sugar water has been proven effective for further comforting the baby during circumcision.
A sweet Kosher wine, that is used during the traditional ceremony also comforts the newborn as he is joyfully presented into the covenant of circumcision.
